How to Choose a Solar Skylight: Size, Position and Controls
Choose a solar skylight by the light you need and the installation route, not the panel’s size alone. Measure the room, identify where extra light would help, and have the roof collector and cable path assessed before selecting a model.
Start with a short room brief
Record the room’s length, width and ceiling height. Note whether you want general daytime brightness, light over a particular surface or more even light along a passage. Include existing windows, other lights and finishes: a dark kitchen and a pale hallway with the same floor area can feel very different.
A four-by-five-metre room has 20 square metres of floor area, but that calculation does not by itself identify the right product. Ceiling height, layout, daylight from elsewhere and the lighting task all matter. A solar-powered LED panel may supplement other lights rather than replace them.
Read the exact model specification
The illume PRO specification page lists model-specific output and suggested illumination areas. For example, its high-spec KIS1013TA round panel is listed at up to 2,030 lumens with a 7 m² illumination area, while KIS3014TA is listed at up to 4,290 lumens and 20 m². These are manufacturer figures, not a guarantee of brightness in every room.
Check the full model code, rather than ordering by a broad description such as “350 mm skylight”. Similar-looking panels can have different outputs or mounting arrangements. Also distinguish the visible frame dimension from the cut-out required in the ceiling. Do not cut an opening from a generic sizing table.
Place the light for the room’s use
A central panel can suit an open room, but the centre is not automatically the best position. Mark where people work, read or walk. Consider pendant lights, ceiling fans, cabinets, vents and any shadows those features may create.
For an L-shaped corridor, separate light sources may distribute light more usefully than one panel around the corner. In a kitchen, check how the proposed position works with bench lighting. A sketch showing furniture and the areas that feel dark helps the installer explain the alternatives without promising a result from floor area alone.
Assess the roof collector and cable route together
The outdoor collector needs a suitable mounting position with useful sunlight. Shade from trees, chimneys or nearby buildings can change during the day and through the year. The best ceiling position may be some distance from the best collector position.

A ground-floor room under another storey may be possible where a suitable cable route exists; it should not be approved or ruled out from the storey count alone.
Decide on mounting and controls before ordering
Flush mounting and surface mounting give different finishes and have different space requirements. A surface fitting does not remove the need to conceal or protect its cable. Concrete ceilings, restricted cavities and existing services need to be considered before choosing a finish.
Ask separately about dimming, switching and after-dark operation. Accessories are not interchangeable across every range. A mains-powered night accessory uses electricity and may require a new power point or other licensed electrical work. If several lights are planned, have the complete system matched at the outset rather than assuming extra panels can be added later.

Can I choose a size from the room area alone?
Use floor area as a starting point. The selected model’s output, room proportions, ceiling height and available sunlight also affect the result.
Can several indoor panels share one collector?
Some matched systems support multiple panels. The collector, panels and controls must be specified together; do not assume an existing single-panel system can be expanded.
Will surface mounting work on a concrete ceiling?
It may be an option, but the fixing method and cable route still need assessment. Surface mounting does not make every concrete or multi-storey installation straightforward.
