A successful pendant installation starts with the fitting’s weight, the ceiling support and where the light needs to fall. Replacing a fitting at an existing point is different from adding new wiring or moving a pendant over a table or kitchen island.
Check the fitting before deciding on the position
Give the installer the exact product information, including weight, dimensions, mounting instructions and the intended lamp or LED driver. A decorative fitting can need more support than the light it replaces. The ceiling lining alone does not establish that the proposed mounting is suitable.
Also check whether the product is suitable for the location. A pendant selected for a dining room may not be appropriate for a damp or exposed area. If you are supplying the light, confirm the product and all required parts before the installation appointment.
Set the height around the furniture and people
For a kitchen island, mark the usable bench area and consider sightlines across the room. The fitting should provide useful light without sitting in the way of normal movement or creating distracting glare. Multiple pendants need spacing that suits the island and the fittings, not a fixed rule about always using three.
For a dining table, plan around the table’s position and the seated view. If the table is likely to move, discuss that before fixing the ceiling point. Bedside pendants need to work with the mattress height and the position used for reading.
Stairwells and high voids need particular attention to access, clearances and future maintenance. Do not order a long drop from a room photograph alone. Agree on the intended finished position with the installer before the fitting is connected.
Distinguish an existing point from a new location

In a finished ceiling, the cable path may be less direct than it looks from below. Ask whether surface cable management or additional access openings would be needed before accepting a concealed-wiring assumption.
Check the whole dimming combination
A fitting being labelled “LED” does not establish dimmer compatibility. The lamp or integrated driver must support dimming, and the dimmer must suit its load and control method. If several fittings share a dimmer, the complete arrangement needs checking.
For example, Clipsal’s C-Bus compatibility guidance requires the particular dimmer type and LED arrangement to be considered. That is a reason to check the exact combination, not a recommendation that every pendant needs that system.
Tell the installer whether you want ordinary switching, dimming or a compatible smart control. Ask for the proposed combination to be identified rather than relying on a promise that any dimmer will work. Flickering, limited adjustment or buzzing needs investigation; it should not be accepted as a normal feature of every LED installation.
Compare installation quotes by scope
The number of fittings, access, new wiring, support and controls affect the total. Clarify whether the quote includes the pendant itself, globes, removal of the old fitting, testing and the electrical certificate. Include GST treatment and any special access equipment.
Ask who will patch and paint old holes, and whether unpacking or assembly of a complex decorative fitting is included. A like-for-like replacement and a new row of pendants over a finished kitchen are not the same job. A written scope helps avoid comparing unlike prices.
Arrange the electrical work and handover
Fixed-wired pendant installation needs an appropriately licensed electrician. The relevant Certificate of Electrical Safety records the electrical work; it does not automatically certify every unrelated circuit in the house. See Energy Safe’s certificate guidance.
